Qualifying Examination

Purpose

The purpose of the qualifying examination (QE) is to evaluate a doctoral student's knowledge related to theory and domain of knowledge as well as scholarly inquiry pertaining to the area of the student's dissertation or interest. The exam has both a written component and an oral component. The student should demonstrate sufficient expertise of the theoretical and methodological issues related to the problem as a basis for pursuing his/her own research. The oral examination provides the student with an opportunity to elaborate on the written component, as well as other aspects that are not addressed in the written component. The specific purposes of the examination are to move to candidacy, to begin preliminary work on the dissertation, and to provide students the opportunity to engage in scholarly discourse with the faculty and obtain expert guidance.

Timeframe

A doctoral student is eligible to take the QE after completion of core courses (13 credits) and pass with GPA at least 3.00. The submission schedule for PhD 003 Qualifying Examination Request Form for the students will be announced in advance.

Evaluation Criteria

1. A doctoral student must pass the QE both written and oral components to receive an overall passing score.

2. If a student does not pass the QE, he/she must re-take the QE exam within 6 months. If the student fails the second exam, the Program Chair must bring this issue to the Administrative Program Committee for final resolution on the either one of the following:

2.1 Propose the expiry of the student status to Dean of Faculty of Graduate Studies, or

2.2 Propose the change of program level from Doctoral Degree Program to Master's Degree Program in Nursing or related field to Dean of Faculty of Graduate Studies.
