The program of study requires approximately three or four years to complete. In the first year of the program the main emphasis is on coursework. During the second year, students prepare for the doctoral qualifying examination. Upon successfully passing the qualifying exam, PhD candidacy is contingently achieved. The process of conducting a doctoral dissertation then starts onward. The final requirement is the presentation and publication of a dissertation.
