Stream 1: Disaster management: Implication for Women's health
In recent times, there have been major natural disasters internationally. Globally, women and children are particularly affected by disasters, accounting for more than seventy five percent of displaced persons. In addition to the catastrophic impacts of natural disasters and the absence of health care, women are also more vulnerable to increased rates of sexual and domestic violence while displaced. Social and economic upheaval following a natural disaster increases the vulnerability of women not only as a consequence of gender based caregiving roles but also the loss of income due to death of spouse and loss of employment.
The objectives of this interactive workshop are to:
- Provide an overview of disaster management and strategic priorities for addressing gender based issues
- Present an interactive forum to discuss gender based vulnerabilities in women’s health
- Identify strategies for recognizing women and girls who are marginalized and at risk due to social, economic and cultural circumstances
- Review best practices for undertake a gender- based assessment in disaster management
- Discuss strategies for implementing recommendations of the International Council of Nurses and the World Health Organization on disaster preparedness.
- Develop strategies to formulate international and interdisciplinary partnerships to address gender based issues in disaster management
